Information Maps: My cascading filter does not work …

Submitted by on 2011-12-02 – 6:00 AM

After you have setup the cascading filter from SAS Information Map Studio, you run a test and notice that the cascading filter is not working properly. Instead of filtering on your desired variable – it returns everything. Eeek … how could this happen to a programming deity such as yourself? Let’s find out …

Testing the Information Map Filter

In this example, I was setting up a cascading filter so that once an employee is selected all the customers for that employee appear. However, if you select the company president, Diane Murphy; all of the customers are available.  Diane is not a sales rep and should not have any customers available to select.  However, in the following screen capture – you see that I can select every customer available.  My cascading filter was not working properly.

Information Map Needs a More Dynamic Filter

In this example, the parent filter is Employee and the child filter is Customer. To determine what is wrong, you can open the child filter called CustomerCasFilter to explore. I found the issue in the CustomerPrompt. When I setup the prompt, I had made the list population method list static instead of dynamic. As a result, the prompt was using the static list (meaning values I had supplied) instead of dynamically filtering (all values available) using the Employee name.

Test the Information Map Again

Once I set the prompt to be dynamic, the filter worked properly.  To demonstrate to myself that it worked, I ran two tests.  In the first one I selected Diane Murphy; there were no customers available to select and no values returned. Leslie Thompson was selected for the second test. The list correctly contained only the customers Leslie represented.
