How to Clean an RV Fresh Water Tank

Regularly cleaning your RV fresh water tank is essential to ensure that you have access to safe and clean water during your adventures. Over time, sediment, bacteria, and algae can build up in the tank, affecting the water quality and potentially causing health issues. Follow these steps to properly clean your RV fresh water tank:

  1. Prepare the necessary tools: Before starting the cleaning process, gather the required tools such as a water hose, a cleaning wand, bleach or RV-specific tank cleaner, and a funnel.
  2. Empty the tank: Start by draining the existing water from the tank. Make sure to open all the faucets in your RV to remove any leftover water.
  3. Mix the cleaning solution: Fill a bucket with water and add the recommended amount of bleach or RV tank cleaner. Use the funnel to pour the solution into the tank.
  4. Fill the tank: Fill the tank to its capacity with clean water. This will help in distributing the cleaning solution throughout the tank.
  5. Agitate the solution: Drive your RV around for a few miles to allow the cleaning solution to slosh around and reach all parts of the tank.
  6. Let it sit: Park your RV and let the cleaning solution sit in the tank for at least 12 hours. This will ensure that it effectively disinfects the tank.
  7. Flush the tank: After the solution has had time to sit, thoroughly flush the tank by draining all the water from the tank.
  8. Rinse and sanitize: Fill the tank with clean water again and repeat the draining process to rinse out any remaining cleaning solution.
  9. Test the water: Once the tank is emptied, fill it with fresh water and test it for any unusual odor or taste to ensure it is clean and safe for use.

By following these steps regularly, you can maintain a clean and safe RV fresh water tank, providing you with fresh and potable water throughout your travels.
